Another Star Wars Movie in Development
Yesterday, January 9th, on Star Wars’ social media pages they announced that the Mandalorian and Grogu were headed to the big screen. This iconic duo has had ups and downs throughout their journey in a galaxy far, far away, but we need to take a current look at Star Wars content and fan reception of what has been and will be released.
Three years ago this is the kind of news that would’ve made me, and I think the vast majority of Star Wars fans ecstatic. However, I don’t feel like that’s the case now. The Mandalorian had a phenomenal first two seasons and fans couldn’t wait for season three, but the newest season wasn’t well received at all. Fans who had originally wanted Dave Filoni to take creative control of Star Wars wanted him fired, and there was so much discourse online.
After the announcement yesterday, I had to look to the comments to see what others were saying. For the most part, people seemed excited by the idea. On the other hand, there were also fans calling the franchise dead, saying they wouldn’t watch the movie. As usual, there’s tons of discourse throughout the Star Wars fandom and when this movie comes out the same thing will happen.
On top of the split opinions going on with the TV shows, since 2017, Star Wars movies have not been well received by fans. The end of the Skywalker saga marked the end of a story that had started back in 1977 and I am not sure Lucasfilm had a plan for movies after that.
According to Comicbook.com, there are 9 Star Wars movies currently in development with three of those movies being a trilogy directed by Rian Johnson. On top of those 9 movies, there have been countless ones announced and removed from the release schedule. Numerous big names in science-fiction and fantasy have been confirmed or rumored to have a Star Wars movie in development within the past few years. Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios reportedly had one in development, and the writers of Game of Thrones had a Star Wars project before it was dropped.
Back in April there were official announcements of three Star Wars movies, including a Rey Skywalker solo movie, a Dawn of the Jedi movie, and an untitled New Republic movie. These take up three of the spots earlier mentioned and I truly believe that out of these three and the Mandalorian and Grogu movie, none of them will ever hit theaters. With so many movies supposedly in development, and so many already canceled, I find it hard to have hope that I will ever watch a new Star Wars movie in theaters again. I think that the time for big budget Star Wars has passed, fans can’t agree on anything and it doesn’t seem like there is anything that doesn’t have the possibility of getting canceled.
And maybe it’s not a bad thing for Star Wars to pass the torch to another sci-fi franchise. Avatar is becoming more consistent with content being released and lots of people, including myself, liked Dune. However, with all that, Star Wars has faced a lot of hate throughout the years and it’s prevailed so, who’s to say it stops here?
