Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga Review

Do you have it in you to make it epic? A memorable line from Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga’s villain Dementus, and something that director George Miller had to be asking himself since 2015 when Mad Max: Fury Road came out. That’s what the last two movies in the Mad Max franchise have been: epic.

After being taken from her home, the Green Place, Furiosa fights with everything she has to get back and to get revenge on those who took her.

This movie has two noticeable names, those being Anya Taylor-Joy, most known for The Queen’s Gambit and Chris Hemsworth, most known for his role as Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Both deliver very good performances as Hemsworth takes his stand as an energetic, and good, villain. He has not always been able to show what he is capable of, but he has shown flashes before in movies like Rush. He seemed to be doing a light hearted Joker and it worked.

On top of solid performances, this movie had amazing action sequences. There was an entire 15 minute action scene and it is mind blowing. There is truly nothing to knock about this action as it is top notch in terms of hand to hand fights, car chases, and so many other things. It felt like this movie introduced new ways to kill and new ways to move throughout action scenes. From nameless characters pole vaulting to create explosions to rear ending someone in the sand, this movie had it all.

Along with the action, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga had incredible designs throughout. Something that has always been consistent in this series, especially the most recent movies, has been the costumes. The unique designs make it memorable and more engaging. Also with the costumes were the cars. Since the Mad Max franchise is a post-apocalyptic series, technology has not been able to advance, and because of that, cars are stuck in the 1980s. This allows for a Camaro, Mustang and a Volkswagen Bug to be turned into off roading vehicles and it rules.

When there is good, there is also not so good. With all Mad Max movies, there are a lot of the not so good, but it does not make them all bad movies. With Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga it hurts because of the runtime. Clocking in at 2 hours and 28 minutes, it has a lot that can be cut out. Entire sequences that show parts of Furiosa’s life could be not shown at all, or combined with each other. Unfortunately it made the runtime feel like forever.

There are also very noticeable VFX issues, not necessarily with what was in the foreground, but in the background. It was painfully obvious that there was so much green screen used in this movie. While a green screen can be a good thing, it should be used properly and utilized well. There was a clear divide between the characters in the foreground and the background setting. Another thing that was confusing about Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga was the coloring. It may be a weird thing to nit pick at, but it was right there to see. In Mad Max: Fury Road, there is a unique orange coloring to the entire movie, especially any part of the movie that took place outside. For some reason, that unique look was nowhere to be found in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.

While there are some downs, it does not pull the entire movie down. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is still a good, high action, and entertaining movie. The world that George Miller has created is an interesting one, and one that should be expanded on more. With everything in mind, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga gets an 86/100.
