The Fall Guy Review
Stunts, stunts, and more stunts, The Fall Guy delivers it all. This was a movie I was very much looking forward to, as it was my 5th most anticipated movie for the first six months this year. Even though it has dealt with countless delays including getting pushed back because of Dune: Part 2 and Challengers, The Fall Guy has endured.
Stunt guy Colt Seavers comes back to stunt work 18 months after breaking his back on a stunt. Thrown quickly into action as superstar Tom Ryder goes missing, Colt must find Ryder as soon as possible to get the next big action movie back on track. However, Colt finds something much more sinister.
I did not expect much from this movie other than some dumb fun, and it was, but it was so, so much fun. From start to finish, I was smiling watching this movie. Once again, Ryan Gosling proved to me that he should be the biggest name in Hollywood right now. He has an unmatched level of charisma and it shows every time he’s on screen. Gosling is truly one of the funniest actors working today and he never ceases to entertain. Gosling constantly gives the audience what they are looking for. That is something that is brought up quite a bit in this movie, the audience.
The Fall Guy dives into what it means to be a stunt guy, obviously taking a bit of an entertainment route with it, but who cares. Stunt guys go greatly under appreciated and that is something this movie seeks to change. David Leitch, who also directed 2022’s Bullet Train and 2018’s Deadpool 2, was a former stuntman himself. Leitch and Gosling both made it a point during the promotion of this movie to emphasize the importance of a stuntman. Gosling even went as far as to say this was a campaign to have Best Stunts an official category at the Oscars. There has been more and more buzz for this campaign as of late, especially with John Wick: Chapter 4 being praised for its stunts.
On top of the stunts, this movie provides the perfect balance between action, comedy, and romance. Emily Blunt does a great job as the love interest in the movie while also delivering cheesy, but laughable lines. During this movie, the characters are also shooting a movie, this easily provides a way to bring so much more entertainment and Gosling and Blunt do a great job bringing you one of the best comedies of the year. You can see the chemistry on screen and it is a lovable time.
The music in this movie was also phenomenal. It never took me out of the movie, and it blended so well to provide perfect comedy. From AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck” to Taylor Swift’s “All Too Well”, the music is all over the place, but never out of place. It goes well with the action, and the slower parts. There was a scene where Jodie, Emily Blunt’s character, is singing karaoke but it almost is dissing Gosling’s character of Colt Seavers. During the scene, we see Colt fly past the bar fighting bad guys and it might seem dumb and cliche, but it’s so perfect and fitting.
Overall, The Fall Guy provides laughs suitable for everyone. It’s a rom/com disguised as a comedy/action movie, but it’s really for the stuntmen, the people who are the unsung heroes of some of our favorite movies of all time. This movie pushes for stunts to be an Oscar category and I think they might just get it. As of now, this is my second highest rated new movie of 2024 at a 94.
