New Star Wars Trilogy in Development
One of the biggest, if not the biggest, franchises ever is making its way back to the big screen. That’s right: Star Wars is back.
There are always numerous Star Wars movies seemingly in development, and as of now, only one of them has a completed script and has finished filming. That movie is The Mandalorian and Grogu which is a spinoff and will most likely be the conclusion of the TV show The Mandalorian. However, at Star Wars Celebration in 2023, it was announced that Dave Filoni would direct his own Star Wars movie that would be the climax of the “Mandoverse,” which includes the post Galactic Empire shows on Disney+. James Mangold was announced to be working on an origins of the Jedi movie, and a new movie on the new order of Jedi starring Dailey Ridley as she returns to play Rey Skywalker.
There have been some conflicting reports on what this new trilogy will entail. There are some that say this trilogy will be episodes 10, 11, and 12, while others say that it will not continue the Skywalker story. While there are no plot details yet, one thing is known, Simon Kinberg will be the writer and a producer on all three of the upcoming movies. Kinberg is primarily known for writing the X-Men series from 2000-2019, and he also worked with Disney Channel on the show Star Wars: Rebels.
There are a few things to think about here. The first is that Star Wars does not have a great track record when it comes to making new movies. The sequel trilogy that was released from 2015-2019 was not well received by fans and it has caused a massive split in the fandom. Star Wars also does not have the best track record of even getting these movies into development. There have been constant reports of Taika Waititi, the director of Jojo Rabbit, writing his own movie for about the last three years. Waititi isn’t the only filmmaker to go through this. Patty Jenkins who directed the Wonder Woman movies for the DCEU, the writers for Game of Thrones, and even Marvel Studios’ president, Kevin Feige have all been tied to a Star Wars movie, and they’ve all been canceled.
Surprisingly enough, filmmakers are still lining up to make their very own Star Wars movie. If Lucasfilm and Disney want to be successful going forward with this intellectual property that is precious to so many people, they need to commit to following through with what they announce. Since 2019, Star Wars has been vacant from the big screen, and while that drought is supposed to come to an end in 2026, there's never a guarantee. With as little news as there is with this new trilogy, many hope that it leads to something original and not based around the galaxy’s most infamous family, the Skywalkers.
Without fail, people will show up when there is a Star Wars movie in theaters. However, this new trilogy should be handled with care. Actors and actresses who are cast need to be protected, but before all of that, it needs to actually have progress in being made.
