5 Movie Night Mistakes Guys Make: The Worst Films for a Date

At every point in a relationship a couple has to begin to learn each other's ideal form of entertainment. It is often music, sports, video games, but in this case I’m focusing on movies. Here is a list of the top 5 worst date night movies for a guy to choose.

5. Tenet (2020)

Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi spectacle is a lot to take in, especially on the first watch. Despite it not being the worst movie in Nolan’s filmography, it’s wildly confusing and makes literally no sense. If you’re a guy recommending this movie to your date, think about a few things. First, has your date seen this movie, or is she into movies at all? If the answer is no to both of these questions, then don’t show this to them. Secondly, how much do you want to explain a movie while trying to enjoy it? If your date is watching this for the first time and you’re the “expert,” they’re going to ask questions. No one wants to be mansplained to, and no one wants to talk during the entire 2.5 hour runtime of “Tenet.”

4. The Godfather (1972)

Yes, I know “The Godfather” is the mafia movie of all mafia movies, but it’s such a “dude” movie. There’s so many characters and it’s a long 3 hours at points. Guys will sit down and recommend this left and right, for good reason, but it’s just not a date movie. Like “Tenet,” if the person you’re seeing is into movies and for some reason they haven’t seen “The Godfather,” then yeah, obviously show it to them. However, most people don’t want to have a date like it’s a movie in the 1910s… silent. Even “Barbie” takes a hilarious shot at how women view guys who obsessively watch this movie. Again, it is very good, and it comes together so incredibly well during the last scene, but watch it with friends, not your date.

3. Fight Club (1999)

The last three movies on this list all fall into the same category: “Movies where guys completely miss the point and make it their whole personality.” David Fincher’s “Fight Club” is a perfect example of this. It’s a movie that is anti-capitalism and shows how dangerous toxic masculinity can be. Unfortunately, it’s a really good movie that a lot of guys will love to rewatch because it makes them feel something. It makes them feel like they’re not the only ones. Brad Pitt and Edward Norton are great in it, and with the twist at the end, it can be entertaining. But guys, please don’t tell your girlfriend this is in your top 3 movies of all time. She’ll break up with you.

2. American Psycho (2000)

Are you seeing a trend yet? “American Psycho" is the exact same as “Fight Club.” It’s about mocking the toxic, white male, who works on Wall Street and thinks he’s all that. Christian Bale does his thing and knocks his role as Patrick Bateman out of the park, but this movie is disgusting. There’s so much sex, and so much on the nose messaging that I’m not sure how this ever gained cult level traction. The worst part about it is that it has the stupidest ending ever. Did Bateman kill those people or didn’t he? I don’t know. What I do know is that it’s a cop out and a dumb ending. Guys, if you think this is about dudes being awesome and getting laid, you’re so far mistaken. Please, don’t show this movie to anyone. It should honestly never be seen again.

1. The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)

I mean you had to have seen this coming right? At its core, “The Wolf of Wall Street” means well. It’s the rise and fall of a sex addicted, misogynistic, toxic character. It shows how drug, gambling, sex and literally everything else wrong with this world is not fulfilling. Like the last two movies, a guy who is likely to suggest this movie during a date has no idea what it’s about. All they see is a rich guy having sex and doing drugs and they think it looks like the best life to live. Leonardo DiCaprio does give a very good performance, but it doesn’t take away from the awful taste left in your mouth.

All in all, there are good movies that can work really well for all parties during a date night, maybe I’ll make a list about that soon. However guys, be sure to stay away from showing your date these five movies, especially if you’re within your first months of dating.
