Lancaster Welcomes a Familiar Face Back to the Movies
Lancaster has no shortage of movie theaters. From world wide chains like Regal Cinemas, to local spots like Penn Cinema and Zootropolis, there’s theaters all over the place. On August 1, Lancaster added another theater to the list.
In Willow Street, Kendig Square Movies 6 reopened its doors after being shut down in 2024. I took an opportunity to go and watch the newest “Naked Gun” movie to give you my thoughts on the newest theater in Lancaster. First off, I would like to say that this is a theater I went to often while growing up. I saw anything from “Bolt,” and “Cars 2,” to “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” and “Batman v Superman” at this theater. However, I will be very unbiased in my review.
I am going to start off with some pros. The best pro is the price. You simply can’t beat it. Tickets are $11 for adults and $7 for kids and seniors, and $7 for everyone before 4pm. Simply put, no other theater in the area is able to compete with those prices. Everywhere else tickets are at least $15 and if it’s a matinee showing, tickets could maybe drop to $12. Even the concessions are cheaper. A large popcorn is $8 and a soda is around $5, however they are smaller than what you’d see at a Regal or Penn Cinema, but who even eats all that popcorn anyways? Regardless, if you have a family or want a cheaper date night movie, this is the place to be.
The second pro is the seats. I do have some problems with the seats, but I’ll get to those later. Kendig Square Movies 6 has some of the most comfortable movie theater seats out there. There is incredible back support, and they’re also heated. Heated seats are actually a huge plus because most theaters are freezing cold. A lot of times during the summer, I’ll go in shorts and a t-shirt because it’s pushing 100 degrees outside, but then I’ll get to my seat and freeze to death. However, the way these seats recline and how the screen is set up is a little awkward, but I’ll get to that in a moment.
My last pro is the trailers beforehand. When I go to see a movie at Regal Cinemas, the showtime could be at 7pm, but because of ads and trailers beforehand, it doesn’t start until 7:30pm. This is without a doubt one of my biggest annoyances when seeing a movie in theaters. However, that was not a problem at this theater. My showtime was at 4:35pm, I saw one trailer, and “Naked Gun” started promptly at 4:39pm. Now I’m not sure if this is something that will be able to continue, but it was very nice to see.
Those were the three pros I could come up with while I was watching “Naked Gun.” Despite being very important parts of the movie going experience, they aren’t everything. Now onto the cons which go hand in hand.
The first con is the screen size. It’s simply too small for a movie theater. This is definitely because it went under a huge renovation and they probably weren’t allowed to knock down walls to make the individual theaters larger, but it definitely took away from the experience. From the distance I was sitting at, it was just like watching a movie at home. Needless to say, I was a bit disappointed.
My last con is the seating arrangements. One of the best things about theaters is the screen size, and the stadium seating which is when the last row is the highest up and the first row is on the ground. Unfortunately, Kendig Square Movies 6 does not have stadium seating, at least in the theater I was in. This forced the screen upward so I was looking up at a smaller screen, despite being in the second to last row. It made for a mildly uncomfortable experience despite the extra cushioning on the chair itself. The chair was comfortable, but the reclining aspect was weird due to where the screen was located. I could not fully recline my chair and be fully relaxed the whole time. Again, the cushioning was great, but I ended up spending about an hour and a half propped up on the arm rests just to have my legs reclined.
Compared to other theaters in the area, this is a good one. It’s clean, the sound quality is good, and it gets you in and out just as most people usually prefer. Kendig Square Movies 6 is a vast improvement from what it used to be. While not perfect and still needed the one extra thing to push it over the top, like an IMAX or Dolby theater, it is a good theater. It has cheap prices and comfy seats, and it does get my stamp of approval.
